Jan Aushadhi Kendra (Generic Pharmacy)

The Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) was initiated to address the issue of high prices of branded (generic) medicines compared to their unbranded generic equivalents, which offer the same therapeutic value. Considering the widespread poverty across India, the aim was to make quality generic medicines available at affordable prices to benefit everyone. The Pharma Advisory Forum, in a meeting on 23rd April 2008, decided to launch the Jan Aushadhi Campaign. This campaign involved selling generic medicines through dedicated outlets known as Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras (PMBJK) in various districts across the country. The goal is to establish at least one PMBJK in each of the 630 districts, with plans to expand to sub-divisional levels, major towns, and village centers.

BPPI – Bureau of Pharma PSUs of India

The implementation agency for Jan Aushadhi, BPPI, was established in December 2008 under the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Government of India. It was created with the support of all Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs) and registered as an independent society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 in April 2010. BPPI operates under the provisions of the General Financial Rules (GFR), 2005 (as amended), the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) guidelines, and instructions from the Department of Pharmaceuticals. The roles of BPPI include overseeing the establishment and operation of PMBJKs.
